Comprises diary of Captain John Richards Harris written from 7 September 1917 on embarkation at Melbourne for medical service in the Middle East on troopship "Kyarra", until mid-December 1918, awaiting embarkation at Suez for return to Australia. Also, personal letters, written at sea and in Egypt and Palestine, to his family, 13 September 1917-15 December 1918; copies of birth, marriage and death certificates; examination results from University of Melbourne; war records; and two copies of photograph published in Table Talk, 27 May 1937.

John Richards Harris (1868-1946), physician, graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1902. He enlisted in the Australia Army Medical Corps in 1917 and embarked for Cairo on HMAT Kyarra on 7 September 1917. In Cairo he served as a medical officer for the No. 1 (initially No. 67) Squadron of the Australian Flying Corps.
